Usage
Mastermax Extra Breathable Membranes are satisfactory for use as on-site or factory-applied breather membranes in timber/steel-frame walls with a cavity and a masonry outer leaf, weather-boarding or tile/slate cladding.
Installation
It is advised to install Mastermax Extra when the wall framing is already constructed, but before the windows and doors are set. The substrate must be solid, clean, and free from parts, dust, loose material, ice, other contamination, and chemicals (e.g. solvents, surfactants) that could be detrimental to the installation. Installation must take place above zero degrees Celsius.
Mastermax Extra should be installed with the printed, green side out, over exterior sheathing board or insulation as a secondary drainage layer under the primary water shedding cladding system according to CCMC Sheathing Membrane-Breather Type.
Start at an outside corner, leaving minimum 6” (150 mm) overlap by the starting corner. The underlayment must remain vertical during unroll, tight, and flat over the entire surface without any blockages, allowing any water to drain down to the through wall flashing. The bottom edge extends over foundation, still plate interface by minimum 2” (50 mm). Upper layer on the wall should overlap bottom layer by a minimum of 6” (150 mm) and vertical flaps at least 12” (300 mm) which should be staggered where it is possible. Do not place above windows. Unroll over windows and doors.
The applied fasteners shall be strong and long enough to fix Mastermax Extra to the stud framing. Fasten at the top and bottom of the roll within 2” of the edge. Fasteners should be spaced every 6” (150 mm) around door and window openings and at the perimeter of the wall; between 12” and 18” (300 mm-400 mm) along the vertical stud lines.
During installation around the window or door openings, incise an X-cut from corner to corner. Pull the flaps inwards, fold and trim excess material and fix through all layers to the framing membrane. Use Tuck 205-02 Contractor’s Sheathing Tape around windows, doors, vertical and horizontal seams.
Pipes and Conduit: Placement of an ample piece of membrane Mastermax Extra can be utilized as a skirt around surface penetrations. The recommended length of material from penetration to edge of barrier “skirt” necessitates a minimum of 12 (300 mm) of Mastermax Extra. We recommend four incisions in the material to form a cross pattern that can be placed over the penetration. Extend the flaps of material upwards along vertical penetration and seal with Contractor’s Sheathing Tape. It is also advised to tape the top edge of the “skirt” to vertical surface. Products that have flanges should simply require a hole of the appropriate diameter be cut into the sheathing membrane and secured using sheathing tape.
Tears and Holes: small tears and holes can be repaired with approved sheathing tape. Larger holes may require a generous portion of sheathing material to cover the damaged area. Insert an ample sized piece of Mastermax Extra that extends 5” horizontally beyond the damage and insert up and under the underlayment above. Proceed to affix mechanically to substrate at both the top and bottom and tape the seams.

Cladding Installation
Mastermax Extra shall be installed in accordance with this guide. In Canada, the recommendations of NBC 2005 must be considered. It is advised to install Mastermax Extra with minimum of 10 mm airspace behind cladding. Ventilation mat can be also used for compliance this recommendation. Any damaged areas should be repaired or replaced before application. Installation should be continuous across the surface being clad. The cladding must be finished as soon as possible in accordance with the system manufacturers’ instructions and the project specifications. Recommendations of installation regarding cladding system must also be considered to ensure water repellant properties and ensure proper Mastermax Extra performance. When a delayed finish of primary cladding is expected, use supplementary fastening to mediate wind exposure (e.g. cap nails, battens).
